NEWS UPDATE - MAY 2026

HELPING HEALING HANDS

For a family in rural Rwanda or Uganda, the difference between recovery and tragedy often comes down to one person: a nurse. In these communities, the Nurse+ project is far more than a medical initiative—it is life saving. With rising costs of health insurance and medication the church-led clinics stand as a beacon of hope. Hope that relies entirely on the kindness of people like you.

Currently, Christian Hope supports five amazing nurses—3 in Rwanda and 2 in Uganda. While this may seem like a "drop in the ocean", to the mother holding a sick child or the elder seeking dignity in their final days, that drop is everything. These nurses embody selflessness. They are the "hands and feet of Christ," living out their faith through every dressing changed and every fever broken. Their constant devotion is evident - often staying onsite, never off-duty, ready to help at any hour. Others walk miles each way to get to work, or go out to even more remote villages to offer support. Some nurses bring their very young children to work with them as nursery care is a luxury they cannot afford. Their wages are not relative to their skills and dedication, yet they may still need to fund their own training and exams to ensure they keep abreast of medical advances.

The reality is heartbreaking: without our support, these highly skilled professionals are often forced to leave their homes for higher-paying jobs in cities or abroad. When a nurse leaves, a community loses its lifeline.

By providing a vital salary "top-up," Nurse+ ensures these dedicated healers can stay exactly where they are needed most—among the poorest and the least, serving those society too often overlooks.

With costs rising, we are at a crossroads. We need regular, committed supporters to ensure we don’t lose these valuable individuals.

Grace is the CHI supported nurse/midwife at Kimwanyi Clinic in Uganda. She often stays at the clinic due to her long working hours. She has a 19 month old son whom she also brings to work with her, as there are no childcare facilities available.

She related a story of a 17 year old mother coming to the clinic in the second stage of labour. The birth went well and a healthy baby boy was born, but afterwards the poor girl started bleeding and Grace was unable to stop it, she said it was terrifying both to herself and the young mother. Eventually Grace stabilised her but a few moments later the mother went into shock. Grace called in the relations, but they had given up hope. She asked them to join her in prayer, the praying gave them hope and reassurance, the mother recovered and the family knew that God had listened to them. They were strengthened by what their faith had manifested. The mother and baby were later discharged, both in good health.

Brigitte is our longest ‘serving’ nurse. She is in Shyogwe Diocese in Rwanda - she walks 7 miles a day to and from work.

Eleazar is our newest recruit. He is based alongside Grace in Uganda. He feels blessed to be able to share his trust in God with his patients.

Thinking of nurses and all they do for their communities – we would like to remind all sponsors that, if they would like to contribute, it is time for the health insurance to be renewed.  This year we have decided that an average donation of £15 per child would simplify the process for you.  Of course, any donation, whether you are a sponsor or not, would be very much appreciated.  Health insurance in Rwanda enables families to access healthcare and medication at 90% reduction, very important for families living in poverty.  In Uganda there is no national provision for health insurance, but we have found that giving the project £15 per child per year, they are able to cover costs of any illnesses which the family cannot manage to afford – always asking for an affordable contribution from the family.  This has worked very well.

Health insurance donations can be paid directly into the bank,
