Lazy Tuesday

Today is a public holiday in Uganda, Martyrs Day marks the killing of 45 Christians executed for their faith between 1885 & 1887. Patrick understandably wanted to spend the day with his family, or maybe it was our constantly falling asleep in the back of the car that worried him, whatever the reason we have been afforded a day off.

We enjoyed the luxury of waking without an alarm and had time to lay on our beds and marvel at the construction of the banda roof. Having eaten a late breakfast, we spent the morning catching up with reports on the last couple of days.

We happened to mention to Patrick that we may go to the market, he obviously doesn’t trust us out alone as he promptly volunteered Eriab to take us. We were collected promptly and spent a happy hour buying material, some of which we left with a local seamstress to have dresses made, which was all we were interested in really. They will be ready to collect tomorrow evening, what service. The material and tailoring for one dress costs approx. £8 and there will be enough material left over for a skirt at least. Next time we may come with empty cases. Our biggest challenge today was choosing from the vast array of brightly coloured materials available.

After a stop at one of the stalls to buy some balls and bracelets for the children at ALS, we decided that having encroached on his day off, and dragged him around the market, it was only fair to take Eriab out for lunch.

A local street food here is a Rolex, an omelette, tomatoes and onions rolled in a chapati. Eriab knew just where to find the best Rolex, it’s a shame he forgot to tell us one would have been enough for us both!! We were taken to a sports club where we sat outside and enjoyed talking to Eriab whilst sharing lunch and a chocolate milkshake (a first for him).

Then it was back to Banda for a swim and a sit by the pool as the sun dipped below the trees.  All in all a very relaxing day.
