The provision of Harvest TOOLS to poor families.
Our Harvest TOOLS project is aimed at helping the poorest families in the Diocese of Shyogwe (south west of the capital of Rwanda).
Most of the farming in Rwanda, Uganda and Burundi is carried out on a subsistence level, that is, families growing their own food on their own land.
As much of Rwanda in particular is hilly (Rwanda is known as the land of a thousand hills) mechanized farming is nearly impossible, so hand tools are commonly used.
In daily use, the basic hand tools, the pickaxe, spade and hoe can require replacement after only 6 months.
At only £10 a set (for one pickaxe, spade and hoe) these are easily affordable for us - yet represent a great deal to the poorest families in Africa.
We would like to send out funding to allow the Diocese of Shyogwe to purchase several hundred sets of tools for distribution to the poorest families.
As is appropriate, we will allow the diocese to decide if a nominal charge is to be made when the tools are handed over.
